Fireplace work is the most visible tile in a house and the least forgiving. Every cut is at eye level, the veining has to run, and a floor-to-ceiling surround shows any drift in the layout across its full height.

Heat, clearances and substrate
A fireplace surround is not just a decorative wall. The substrate has to suit the appliance, the setting materials have to tolerate the temperatures involved, and manufacturer clearances to combustible materials are not negotiable — particularly around a linear gas firebox with a mantel above it.
We build to the appliance in front of us rather than to a generic detail, and we will tell you early if a mantel position or a material choice is going to run into a clearance problem.
Working with builders
A good deal of our fireplace work comes through builders on custom homes, where the surround is one of the details the whole room is designed around. We are used to working to a schedule alongside other trades, and to coordinating with framers, electricians and finish carpenters so the tile is not the thing holding a job up.
Common Questions
Can you tile over an existing brick fireplace?
Often yes, depending on the condition of the brick, how flat it is and what the appliance requires. Sometimes the better answer is to build a new substrate over it so the finished surround is flat and the clearances are right. We will tell you which after seeing it.
Will the tile crack from the heat?
Not when the assembly suits the appliance. The substrate, setting materials and clearances all have to match what the firebox puts out, which is exactly why we build to the specific appliance rather than to a generic detail.
Can you match the veining across a large surround?
With large-format and slab material, yes — that is much of the point of using it. It has to be planned before anything is cut, because the layout decides where the veining lands and there is no second attempt once the material is cut.
