Why it has to be planned with the floor
In-floor heat is not something that can be added later. The heating element sits within the floor assembly, under the tile, so the decision has to be made before the floor goes in. Retrofitting means pulling the tile up again.
That is the single most useful thing to know: if you are already tiling a bathroom, kitchen or entry, it is the moment to decide. If the floor is going in anyway, adding heat is a fraction of what it would cost as a separate project later.

How it goes in
The element is laid out over a prepared substrate and set into the mortar bed, with the floor sensor positioned so the thermostat reads the floor rather than the room. We test the element before tiling, after setting it, and again once the tile is down — a break found after the tile is in is an expensive problem, so it gets checked at every stage.
Electrical connection to the thermostat is work for a licensed electrician, and we coordinate with yours or with one we work alongside regularly.

Can heated floors be added to an existing tile floor?
Not without taking the tile up. The element sits inside the floor assembly, beneath the tile, so it has to go in while the floor is being installed. This is the main reason to decide now if you are tiling anyway.
Is it expensive to run?
Electric in-floor heat is usually used for comfort in specific rooms rather than as a whole-home heat source, and it is typically run on a programmable thermostat so it warms the floor before you use the room instead of running all day. Running cost depends on the area, your thermostat schedule and your electricity rate — we would rather point you at those variables than quote a monthly figure we cannot stand behind.
Does it work under any tile?
It works well under porcelain, ceramic and stone, which conduct heat readily. That is a large part of why heated floors and tile go together — the same mass that makes tile feel cold underfoot makes it excellent at holding and spreading warmth.
What if the element gets damaged during installation?
We test it before tiling, after setting it, and again once the tile is down. Finding a fault after the floor is finished is an expensive problem, so it gets checked at each stage rather than once at the end.
