Heated floors are the one upgrade nobody regrets and almost everybody assumes they cannot afford. In a bathroom they are usually cheaper than people expect. In a whole house they are usually more expensive than people expect. Here is where the line sits.
What it costs to install
Electric radiant is what goes under nearly every tile floor we heat. It is a thin mat or a loose cable stapled down, embedded in thinset, wired to a thermostat. These are the ranges we quote in Spokane, on top of the tile work itself:

As a rule of thumb, budget $15 to $25 per heated square foot for a bathroom and $12 to $18 for a larger open area. The smaller the room, the higher that per-foot number goes, because the thermostat and the electrical run cost the same whether they serve 20 square feet or 200.
One line that is easy to miss: a heated floor needs its own dedicated circuit, and larger areas may need a relay or a second circuit. If your panel is full, add an electrician’s cost for a subpanel. On older Spokane homes that is worth checking before you fall in love with the idea.
What it costs to run
This is where people are most often wrong in the pessimistic direction. Electric radiant mats draw roughly 12 watts per square foot. A 50 square foot bathroom floor is about 600 watts — comparable to a hair dryer on low, and it is not on continuously.
Run on a programmable thermostat for four or five hours a day across the cold months, that floor draws somewhere around 60 to 90 kWh. At Avista’s residential rates that is under $10 a month — and only for the months you actually want it on.
Whole-floor kitchens and great rooms are a different conversation — the same math at 350 square feet is a real line on the power bill. That is the point at which hydronic starts to be worth pricing.

For a remodel of an existing bathroom, electric wins on almost every axis. Hydronic makes sense when you are already building — a new addition, a basement finish, a whole-floor slab — and when it will be the primary heat rather than a comfort layer.
Where heated floors pay off, and where they do not
Worth it, almost always: bathroom floors. Tile is cold, you are barefoot on it, and the heated area is small enough that both the install and the running cost are modest. This is the highest satisfaction-per-dollar item in a Spokane bathroom remodel, and it is not close.
Often worth it: entryways and mudrooms, where the floor is wet and cold from October to April. Kitchens where people stand for long stretches. Basement floors on slab, which never warm up on their own.
Usually not worth it: a room you walk through in shoes. Under an area you will put a large rug on — the rug traps heat and the manufacturer will tell you not to. And under a vanity, tub or fixed cabinetry, where you cannot put mat anyway, which is why the heated area is always smaller than the room.
Decisions that have to be made before the mat goes down
The floor sensor
A floor sensor is a thin probe embedded in the thinset between two runs of cable. It is what the thermostat actually reads. It is also the one component that can fail and cannot be replaced without breaking tile — so we run a second, spare sensor on every install. It costs almost nothing at the time and it is the difference between a thermostat swap and a floor demolition five years later.
Floor height and transitions
The mat plus its thinset bed adds about a quarter inch. That has to be accounted for at every doorway, at the toilet flange, and where tile meets carpet or hardwood. It is easy to solve if it is planned and awkward to solve if it is discovered.
Where the mat stops
Nothing goes under the vanity, the toilet footprint, or anything else fixed to the floor. Heating cable trapped under a cabinet has nowhere to shed heat. So the layout gets drawn before the tile plan is finalized, and the heated area is often 60 to 75 percent of the room’s square footage. Quotes that price the full room area are quoting a floor that cannot be built.
Testing the cable — three times
Resistance gets checked when the roll is opened, again after it is fastened down, and again after the tile is set. A cable nicked by a trowel reads fine on the first test and dead on the third, and knowing which stage broke it is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.
Does it work under every tile?
Porcelain and ceramic are ideal — dense, stable, and they conduct heat well. Natural stone works and holds heat longer, though it takes longer to warm up. Large-format tile is fine and actually spreads heat more evenly than mosaic.
What needs care is anything with a temperature limit: some luxury vinyl, engineered wood, and certain resilient products cap out around 80 °F. If there is any chance the floor finish changes later, say so before the system is specified.
The Spokane case for it
Spokane has a genuinely long cold season — most years the heating season runs from October into April, and mornings sit below freezing for months. Tile in an unheated bathroom over a crawlspace or an uninsulated basement is measurably cold underfoot for half the year.
That is the whole argument. It is a small, cheap-to-run system that fixes a real daily annoyance for six months a year, and the marginal cost of adding it while the floor is already open is a fraction of what it costs to do later. If you are tiling a bathroom floor anyway, this is the moment to decide.
Getting a real number
We measure the actual heatable area, check what the panel can take, and quote the system and the tile as separate lines so you can see exactly what the heat is costing you. If it does not make sense for your room, we will tell you that too.
